Joint pain is the most common problem experienced by more than 50% of the women during pregnancy. One of the common reasons for joint pain during pregnancy is due to SPD (symphysis pubic dysfunction). This condition arises when the ligaments of the symphysis pubic region softens and relaxes as it prepares for the childbirth.
The structure of the pelvis is a combination of three joints, the pubic symphysis, and two left and right sacroiliac joints that makes it the biggest part of the womans body. These joints help in giving massive ligament support to the pelvis during the period of pregnancy.
Joint pain during pregnancy is a very common complaint of more than 50% pregnant women and they experience soreness in the pubic area, pelvis, knee and also pain in the hips.
Reason for the Pain at the time of Pregnancy
The biggest reason for joint pain during pregnancy is due to the changes in the body structure of the pregnant women. These changes are because of the hormonal alteration and weight gain along with the relaxation process of the joints, tendons and muscles in order to facilitate the growth of the fetus and birth of the child.
The posture of a pregnant woman is changed because of the growing fetus, which leads to some discomfort in the body. This can cause joint pain during pregnancy. The pain can be an apprehension of some serious condition in severe cases that results in swollen pubic bone region extending down to the groin, hip, inner thigh, lower abdomen, and buttock areas.
The joint pain during pregnancy can take place in the first trimester and the symptoms are mostly visible during simple movements of the legs and while standing or walking.
A pregnant woman can avoid joint pain with a little care and effort. They should include adequate amount of calcium and magnesium in their diet. They should drink enough milk and include Vitamin and iron-rich fruits in daily meals.
- They must consume plenty of green vegetables and fluids.
- A pregnant woman should not continuously sit or stand for a long time.
- Wearing good and comfortable supportive shoes can help in the relaxation of the joints during pregnancy.
Treatment for the pain during pregnancy can be done by using ice or heat. Take a warm shower bath.
Very common symptoms during pregnancy are as mentioned below:
- Inflammation or swelling in the hip joint along with pain.
- Difficulty in sitting or standing
- Pain in pelvis areas extending down to the inner thighs.
- Back pain during pregnancy is very common and the reason for this can be the malfunction of the sacroiliac joint. This condition subsides after the delivery of the baby.
The sacroiliac joint helps the pelvis to loosen the strong ligaments to allow normal alternating movement while walking during pregnancy. In the advance stage of pregnancy, it increases the elasticity of the ligaments that is necessary for the birth canal to dilate and allow the baby to pass through it.
